Billows of smoke
from gunfire engulfs
a town echoing with shrieks
of terror and fury.
Spewing flames spread
with deafening roars
of cannons,
blood staining the ground.
Alexandria in the Civil War.

Cloudless sky overlooks
a serene city bordered
by a river twinkling
with golden streaks
painted by the sunset.
Yachts and sailboats anchored
by the dock,
white seabirds hovering above.
Alexandria in 2019.

A city specked
with traces of past
resumes its tranquility,
and tells a story
of now and then.
